Marissa Haugh
Owner of FIT, FULL AND FOCUSED
Marissa Haugh’s professional journey began with a clear interest in the care and development of children. Growing up, she was always drawn to understanding how young people grow, learn, and overcome challenges. That early focus eventually guided her through decades of education and service, leading to a career that spans child life services, teaching, and later, fitness and nutrition coaching. Her path reflects a love of learning and a deep commitment to helping others improve their lives.
Academic Pathway
Born in Athens, Greece, Marissa moved to New England at a young age with her family. During her school years, she explored many interests, but her dedication to child health and family well-being stood out. She pursued a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island. This program gave her the foundation to understand family dynamics and individual development at every life stage.
Her education expanded into both creative and clinical fields. In 2001, she received a Certificate in Fine Arts and Foundation from Parsons’ School of Design, and in 2003, she completed a Master of Science in Child Life at Bank Street College. She also earned a Master’s in Fine Arts, combining her creative skills with scientific training. These academic experiences gave her unique tools to use art and therapeutic approaches to support children and families.
Early Work and Teaching Roles
Marissa’s early career gave her practical experience with children. As a daycare leader and later as a caseworker at Talbot Perkins Children’s Services in Brooklyn, she worked closely with children and families navigating adoption and foster care. These roles gave her a deeper understanding of young people's challenges outside the classroom.
She went on to work at Epiphany Nursery School Camp as a Lead Camp Counselor, where she developed art and cooking activities for children while managing classroom routines. In 1998, she became Head Teacher at Trevor Day School in New York City, a role that allowed her to guide daily classroom activities and adjust teaching methods to meet the needs of her students. These experiences highlighted her patience and adaptability, skills that would serve her well as her career progressed.
Child Life Specialist Work
After earning her advanced degrees, Marissa moved into hospital-based positions. In 2003, she became a Child Life Specialist at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, working across pediatric units. She supported children coping with illnesses such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and transplants. Her role was to use therapeutic interventions to help children and families manage the stress and fear that often accompany serious medical care.
She later joined Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey as an Early Intervention Developmental Specialist. In this role, she worked with infants and toddlers experiencing developmental delays. Her work included detailed assessments and creating intervention plans that involved the entire family. She has been an active member of the Child Life Council since 2001, maintaining her involvement in advocacy for child development and family-centered care.
Transition into Fitness and Nutrition
Marissa’s interests grew to include fitness and nutrition, areas she had long valued personally. In 2017, she earned her Certificate in Fitness and Nutrition from the Academy of Sports Medicine and established her FIT, FULL, AND FOCUSED business in Oceanport, New Jersey.
As a Fitness and Nutrition Coach, Marissa reviews clients’ eating habits, health concerns, and goals to design personalized programs. She emphasizes education by teaching about nutrition science, ingredient selection, and meal preparation. Her approach is rooted in practical and sustainable methods, aiming to reduce unhealthy behaviors while building long-term habits. She develops strong client relationships, supporting lasting progress by combining her organizational skills and personal motivation.
Personal Dedication to Health
In addition to coaching, Marissa has challenged herself through personal fitness goals. She has run marathons, competed in CrossFit, and participated in events such as a Tough Mudder and two Spartan races. These experiences give her firsthand insight into the discipline and perseverance needed to reach demanding goals.
Alongside her professional and athletic pursuits, she has embraced family life, at one point dedicating herself to being a stay-at-home mother. This role reflects the same values of dedication and care that have guided her entire career.
Looking Ahead
Marissa Haugh’s journey reflects both diversity and consistency—diversity in the many roles she has taken on, and consistency in her commitment to health and well-being. From hospitals and classrooms to her coaching practice, she has shaped a career that helps others move forward. Her story shows how education, service, and personal growth can create meaningful change. As she continues her work, her focus remains steady: supporting others in living healthier, stronger, and more balanced lives.
